Diabetes is a disease in which your body has trouble using food for energy. When you eat, your digestive system breaks food down into smaller parts. These smaller parts -- a variety of nutrients and other things -- are then used to run your body. One of these nutrients, a sugar known as glucose, is a primary source of energy for the body.
